How to play
You are a frog hopping up an endless strip of land, road and river. Each press is one hop of one square. A hop is quick and cannot be cancelled once it starts. Your score is the furthest row you have reached, so stepping back and forward again earns nothing. You have one life, and the run ends when you are hit by traffic, land in the water, get carried off the edge of the screen on a log or turtle, or fall off the bottom of the screen.
The bottom of the screen is what pushes you on. It stays still until your first hop. After that it creeps up the world on its own and gets steadily faster the further you have gone. It starts at about a third of a row per second and tops out at about 1.7 rows a second. If it passes you, the run is over. It also never lets you get more than six rows above the bottom edge, so you cannot rush ahead and then wait.
The road and the river work in opposite ways. On the road, touching a car or lorry kills you. On the river, touching nothing kills you, and you have to land on a log or a turtle. While you ride one, it carries you sideways. The game comes from Konami’s 1981 arcade game Frogger, but here the world is new and different on every run.
Tips and strategy
- Turtles dive. Each group spends about one and a half seconds of every six under the water, each on its own timing. A diving turtle will not hold you, so only land on one that has just come up.
- Logs and turtles move you, so line up your next hop with where you will be, not where you are now. Ride too long and the river carries you off the side.
- Every lane runs one way at one speed. Each road lane has either cars or lorries, never both. Lorries are longer but slower, so a lorry lane has bigger gaps that open more slowly.
- Trees on the grass block your hop. Plan a route round them before you reach the bank, because a blocked hop wastes time you may not have.
- Hopping sideways and backwards is allowed. A step back onto safe grass to wait for a better gap is fine, as long as the bottom edge is not close.
- Further out, everything gets harder at once. Traffic and river speeds rise steadily to over two and a half times their starting pace, rivers become more common, and patches of grass to rest on become rarer.
What's in it
One endless mode with one life, and a top-ten board measured in rows. The first few rows are always grass, so you can start calmly. After that, roads and rivers come in bands of two to four lanes, with grass verges between them. Hop with the arrow keys or W A S D. On a phone, swipe in a direction or tap to hop forward. P pauses and R goes back to the home screen.
Questions
Does it ever end?
No. New rows are made as they come into view, and there is no finish line and no level counter.
What counts as my score?
The highest row you stood on during the run. Going back down does not lose points, and going back up the same rows does not add any.
Can I stand still?
Only until your first hop, while the screen is not moving. After that, standing still lets the bottom edge catch you.
Why did I die on a log I was standing on?
Either the log carried you off the side of the screen, or it was a turtle that had just dived.
