STUNT CITY

Drive a chrome car around a vaporwave stunt park. Flip, spin and barrel-roll off ramps and loops, clear eight challenges and upgrade your ride.

A free-roam stunt park in vaporwave colours: a chrome car on a mirror-grid floor under a striped sunset, full of ramps, loops and rings. Drive anywhere, launch off anything, and flip, spin and barrel-roll in the air. Land wheels-down or wipe out.

Eight challenges run in order: rings, loops, big air, a backflip, a gap jump and a stunt show. Stunts and challenges pay cash, which buys engine and nitro upgrades and chrome paints in the garage.

What is in it: A chrome car in a free-roam neon stunt park with ramps and loops. Wipe-outs just reset the car; no people. Neon colours but no flashing. More for parents

How to play

STUNT CITY is a free-roam stunt park in vaporwave colours. You drive a chrome car across a shiny grid floor under a striped sunset, and the park is full of ramps, loops and rings. There is no track: go anywhere, hit anything, and get as much air as you can.

Drive with W A S D or the arrow keys. Shift fires the nitro and Space is the handbrake for drifting. In the air, W and S flip the car forwards and backwards, A and D spin it, and Q and E barrel-roll it. Land with the wheels down or you wipe out. R puts you back at the last safe spot, G opens the garage and M mutes.

An arrow at the top of the screen always points to the next challenge and tells you how far away it is. Drive onto its glowing pad, or press Enter to warp straight there. After a three-second countdown the clock starts. Esc leaves a challenge and takes you back to free roam.

Tips and strategy

  • Stop rotating before you land. The car wipes out if it touches down nose-first or tilted too far onto its side. Let go of the flip and roll keys a moment early. When you are not pressing them, the car slowly levels itself out, and it needs a little time to do so.
  • Nitro only works with the wheels down. It raises your top speed by nearly half, so fire it on the run-up, not in the air. The tank refills slowly on its own, and faster when you land stunts or fly through rings.
  • Loops need speed all the way round. If you slow down near the top you fall off and the game tells you you were TOO SLOW. Hold gas and nitro into the loop and keep holding them.
  • Chain your landings. Land another stunt within three seconds of the last one and your combo goes up, to a maximum of x8. A wipe-out resets it.
  • Flips and rolls are where the points are. A full flip or barrel roll is worth 1,000 points and a half spin 350, against 150 for each second of plain air.
  • Upgrade the engine first. Each engine level adds about 7% to your top speed, which makes the loops and big-air challenges easier. Then grow the nitro tank.

What's in it

A free-roam park with kicker ramps, a 15-metre mega ramp, a raised tower block, a gap jump, a purple flip ramp, a row of five gauntlet ramps and two loops. It also has eight challenges, which open one at a time in this order:

  • SUNSET SPRINT: fly through 8 rings in 55 seconds. Pays $300.
  • CHROME LOOP: ride the loop all the way round in 25 seconds. Pays $400.
  • BIG AIR: stay in the air for 2.2 seconds off the mega ramp. Pays $500.
  • SKY GAUNTLET: hit 5 rings over the ramps in 40 seconds. Pays $600.
  • BACKFLIP: land a flip off the purple ramp. Pays $700.
  • GAP JUMP: clear the gap and land on the far ramp. Pays $800.
  • GRAND LOOP: conquer the giant loop in 30 seconds. Pays $1,000.
  • STUNT SHOW: score 6,000 stunt points in 60 seconds. Pays $1,500.

Clear all eight and the arrow gives way to the words "CITY LEGEND". The garage sells five engine levels ($300, then $600, $900, $1,200 and $1,500) and five nitro-tank levels ($250 up to $1,250). It also has five chrome paints: PINK CHROME, which you start with, and ICE CHROME, SUN GOLD, MIRROR and ULTRAVIOLET at $200 each.

Behind the game

On the ground the car grips hard sideways, so it goes where you point it. The handbrake lets go of most of that grip and tightens the steering, which turns a corner into a drift. Slopes slow you going up and speed you up coming down, and a jump happens naturally when the ground drops away faster than the car does.

In the air the game counts every turn the car makes. When you land, it adds up the full flips, half spins and full rolls, the time spent in the air and any distance over 30 metres, then multiplies by your combo. One fiftieth of those points is paid to you as cash, so free-roam stunting slowly pays for the garage too.

Loops work like a real loop-the-loop. The car is held to the track only while it is going fast enough for the curve to press it on. Below that speed it drops off, so loops reward commitment rather than caution. Your safe spot for R is saved every time you have spent a second driving on the flat floor.

Questions

Do I need an account?

No. Your cash, upgrades, paints and finished challenges are saved in your browser.

Can I play the challenges in any order?

No. Each one opens when you finish the one before it. Finished challenges keep their pads, and a replay pays a quarter of the first-time prize.

Can I play on a phone?

Yes. On a touch screen there are steering arrows and GAS, BRK and NOS buttons. In the air, GAS and BRK flip the car and the arrows spin it. There are no buttons for the handbrake or barrel rolls, so those are keyboard only.

I am stuck upside down.

Press R to go back to the last safe spot. After a wipe-out the car is put back there by itself.

Is it violent?

No. There are no people, and a wipe-out just resets the car.

Does it flash?

No. It is bright neon, but there are no flashing effects.
