SUMO SLAM

Hold to charge, let go to dash. Slam the other blobs off a shrinking, tilting ring and be the last one standing.

Four glossy sumo blobs on a ring floating in the sky, and one rule: be the last one on it. Hold to charge a dash, let go to launch, and a dash that connects throws the other blob hard. One that hits nothing can carry you straight off the edge. From 4 seconds the edge crumbles and the ring shrinks, from 6 seconds it tilts and keeps swinging round so everyone slides downhill, and at 48 seconds it starts collapsing fast, so no round reaches a minute. First to three rounds wins the match.

Power-up orbs drop in: GIANT makes you bigger and heavier, HEAVY gives you an iron body that hits barely move, and SPRING turns your next dash into a leap that lands with a shockwave. Beat four bot leagues, ROOKIE, CONTENDER, CHAMPION and YOKOZUNA, to unlock the next, win solo matches to unlock four more blob colours, and beat YOKOZUNA for a gold crown. Two players can share one keyboard against two bots.

What is in it: Cartoon toy sumo blobs bump each other off a floating ring and fall away into the clouds with a slide-whistle; nobody is hurt and there is no blood. Blobs flash white for a moment when hit, and the screen shakes on big hits. More for parents

How to play

SUMO SLAM is a party brawler for four round, glossy sumo blobs on a ring floating in the sky. There is one rule: be the last blob on the ring. Win a round and you take a point. The first to three rounds wins the match, and no round lasts a minute.

Move with W A S D or the arrow keys. To attack, hold Space (or Enter, or the mouse button). Your blob squashes down and charges up, reaching full power in just over half a second. Let go and it dashes the way you are steering. A dash that hits another blob throws them hard and makes them dizzy for a moment. A dash that hits nothing keeps going, and it can carry you straight off the edge. Two blobs dashing into each other at the same time is a CLASH, and both get thrown back.

The ring does not stay still. After 4 seconds its edge starts crumbling away and the ring slowly shrinks. After 6 seconds it starts tilting, and the tilt keeps swinging round, so everyone slides downhill. At 48 seconds it collapses fast, so somebody always wins.

On a phone, drag anywhere on the left half of the screen for a floating joystick, then hold the big SLAM button on the right and let go to dash. Esc or P pauses, M turns the sound off, and R plays again from the results screen.

Tips and strategy

  • Charge while you aim. You walk slowly while charging, but you can still steer. Line up the dash first, then let go. A tap is a weak shove, a full charge is a throw.
  • Stand in the middle. The edge is where you lose. Let the others fight near the rim and pick off whoever ends up closest to it.
  • Watch the tilt. When the ring leans, dash so the target is between you and the low side. The slope finishes the job for you.
  • Do not dash into empty space near the edge. If they step aside you keep going. Every dash also has a short cooldown before you can charge again.
  • Grab the orbs. GIANT makes you about one and a half times bigger and twice as heavy for 7 seconds. HEAVY gives you an iron body for 7 seconds: you are over three times as heavy, hits barely move you and you shake them off fast. SPRING turns your next dash into a leap that lands with a BOOM shockwave, knocking away everyone near you. You can even leap over the edge and back, as long as you land on the ring.
  • Falling off loses your power-up, and so does waiting too long: orbs disappear if nobody takes them, or if the shrinking edge reaches them.

What's in it

Each match is you against three bots with food names like Big Mochi, Tofu Tank and Wasabi. There are four bot leagues: ROOKIE, CONTENDER, CHAMPION and YOKOZUNA. You start in ROOKIE, and winning a match in a league unlocks the next one. The higher leagues aim better, charge harder, dodge more and are more careful near the edge. In the first round the bots leave you alone for a couple of seconds and fight each other, so you have time to find your blob. Yours is the one with the pulsing yellow ring under it.

There are eight blob colours. Four are open from the start, and the rest unlock as you win solo matches: pink after 1 win, purple after 3, orange after 5 and mint after 8. Beat YOKOZUNA and your blob wears a gold crown.

Two players can share one keyboard. Player 1 uses W A S D and Space, player 2 uses the arrows and Enter, and the other two blobs are bots.

Questions

What happens if everyone falls off?

The last blob to go over the edge takes the round.

I got knocked out. Do I have to wait?

No. While you are watching the rest of the round, tap or press any key to skip ahead.

Can I play on a phone?

Yes, in portrait or landscape, with the joystick and the SLAM button. Two-player mode needs a keyboard, so it is hidden on touch screens.

Does it save?

Yes, in your own browser: the leagues you have unlocked, your wins, your colour, the crown and your sound setting. Clearing your browser's site data clears the save.
