TWISTER.IO

Be a tornado in a toy town: suck up cones, then cars, then houses, and be the biggest storm when the clock runs out.

Every round is two minutes in a bright toy town against nine rival storms, and the biggest one at the end wins. Steer over anything your size or smaller and it rips loose, spirals up and joins the ring of debris circling you. You start on cones and bins and climb through seven categories: people, cars and cows, trees and vans, houses, towers and the lighthouse, and finally the stadium.

Your debris ring is your armour. Fling pieces at rivals to knock their rings apart, dash when you need speed (it costs mass), and run when your ground ring turns red, because a bigger storm will strip you and swallow you. Classic is the two-minute fight, Daily Town is the same map for everyone each day, and Storm Chase is a solo race to flatten a whole village. Stars from every round unlock six skins and three perks.

What is in it: Cartoon tornadoes suck up toy cars, cows, houses and little people, who float away unharmed; rival storms swallow each other. No blood or injuries. Bigger storms throw small lightning bolts that flash brightly. More for parents

How to play

TWISTER.IO puts you in charge of a tornado in a bright toy town. A round of Classic lasts two minutes against nine computer storms, and whoever is the biggest storm when the clock runs out wins. You grow by sucking things up. Steer over anything your size or smaller and it wobbles, rips loose, spirals up into the air and joins the ring of debris circling you. Everything you lift adds to your mass.

Your storm heads for the spot on the ground under the mouse, and it goes faster the further the pointer is from it. W A S D and the arrow keys work too. On a touch screen, drag anywhere to get a floating joystick, and use the FLING and DASH buttons.

You start small, at Category 1, eating cones, bins and hydrants. As your mass grows you move up through seven categories: people, bikes and benches at 12, cars, cows and boats at 50, trees, vans and containers at 170, houses, shops and barns at 520, towers and the lighthouse at 1,500, and finally the stadium at 4,200. Things in the next size up glow softly so you know what to grow into, and each new category gets a big banner.

The debris ring is your armour. Fling (click, E, J, F or Enter) throws a piece at the nearest rival in front of you. A hit knocks pieces out of their ring and stuns them for half a second, but the throw costs you the mass of what you threw. Dash (Shift or Space) makes you 1.75 times faster but bleeds 3 per cent of your mass every second. Esc or P pauses and R restarts.

Tips and strategy

  • Red means run. When a storm more than 10 per cent bigger than you gets close, your ground ring pulses red, its name tag turns red and an alarm sounds. Get away before it drags you in.
  • An empty ring is the danger. A bigger storm strips one piece at a time. Only when your ring is empty does it swallow you. If you are eaten you come back after a few seconds with about a third of your mass and a short shield.
  • Pick your armour back up. Half of what a bigger storm strips from you drops on the ground beside you, not into its ring. If you escape, sweep it back up.
  • Fling at storms your size. Even fights are where flinging pays. Knock their armour off, then they are yours to strip.
  • Stay on small things early. A Category 1 storm can pull up people, just slowly, so a busy street is never empty. Cars come once you reach Category 3.

What's in it

Three modes. Classic is the two-minute round against nine bots. Daily Town is a map, spawn and set of bots built from the date, so everyone gets the same one each day. It tracks your streak and today's best, and Share copies a result card. Storm Chase is a solo village where you clear every last object as fast as you can, with gold at 100 seconds, silver at 140 and bronze at 190.

The nine rival storms have their own personalities. Some chase food, some hunt smaller storms, some run and some wander. They get sharper as you win and ease off as you lose, and a bot that gets far ahead of you slows down, so a round almost always stays close.

Every finished Classic or Daily round pays stars: three for a win, two for second or third, one otherwise, and one more for flattening 12 per cent of the town. Storm Chase pays three for gold, two for silver and one for bronze. Missions pay two more each, with three active at a time and twelve in total. Stars unlock six skins (Classic, Fire-nado, Fish Storm, Candy Storm, Snow Storm and Galaxy Storm) and three perks: bigger suction, a car to start with, or faster flings.

Questions

Is it really online?

No. The other storms are computer players, so you can play any time.

Why can't I lift that house?

It is too big for you. Houses need Category 5, which starts at 520 mass. Look at the HUD: it shows your category and what you can lift next.

Can I play on a phone?

Yes. Drag anywhere to steer, and tap the FLING and DASH buttons on the right.

Does it save?

Yes, in your own browser: stars, skins, your perk, missions, records, daily streak and sound settings. Clearing your browser's site data clears the save.
