ROOFTOP DUEL

Two buttons, one wobbly fighter. Jump, time your swaying gun and knock your rival off the roof. Beat an eight-rival ladder or duel a friend.

A two-button rooftop duel with chunky, wobbly voxel fighters. One button jumps (you jump the way you are leaning) and the other fires, but your gun sways on its own, so every shot is about timing. Hits push your rival back; knock them off the roof to win the round.

The weapon changes every round between a revolver, a shotgun, a sniper, the automatic burp gun and the lobbed boom tube, across five rooftops. Play the arcade ladder of eight rivals, a quick duel, or two players on one keyboard.

What is in it: Chunky voxel fighters shoot each other with cartoon guns to knock each other off a rooftop; a hit fighter flashes and is pushed back. No blood. More for parents

Controls

  • D / J / F / Enterfire (1 player)
  • P1: W / Djump / fire (2 players)
  • P2: Up / Leftjump / fire (2 players)

Wait for the gun to sway onto your rival, then fire. Do not jump wildly: land badly and you fall over, and a fighter on the floor is an easy target.

How to play

ROOFTOP DUEL is a two-button duel between two chunky, wobbly voxel fighters on a rooftop. The aim is not to shoot your rival down but to knock them off the roof. Every hit pushes them back and tips them over, and the one who goes over the edge loses the round. If both drop at once, it is a double drop and nobody scores.

With one player, W, Space or Up jumps and D, J, F or Enter fires. With two players on one keyboard, player 1 uses W to jump and D to fire, and player 2 uses Up to jump and Left to fire. Esc or P opens the menu, as does the MENU button.

The catch: you jump the way you are leaning, and your gun sways on its own. You do not aim. All you choose is when to pull the trigger and when to jump. Land badly from a jump and you fall over. You can't shoot while you are down, and you have to press jump to get back up.

Tips and strategy

  • Time the sway. Watch the gun swing and fire as it passes over your rival. One well-timed shot beats three wild ones.
  • Aim high. A hit high on the body pushes harder and spins the fighter more than a hit on the legs. A shot to the head makes a ding.
  • Mind the kick. Every shot pushes you backwards and tips you a little. A big gun near the edge can help push you off.
  • Jump with a purpose. Jumping dodges shots and gets you back from the edge, but you jump the way you lean. Wait until you tip towards the middle, then jump. If you land leaning too far over, you go down.
  • Get up fast. A fallen fighter can't shoot. Press jump straight away.
  • Know the weapon. It changes every round:
    • The revolver is steady and fires twice a second. Every match opens with it.
    • The shotgun fires six pellets that only fly a short way, so it is strong up close.
    • The sniper is a big single push, but it is slow to fire again.
    • The burp gun fires as long as you hold the button, with small pushes.
    • The boom tube lobs an explosive in an arc. It throws everyone near the blast, including you, so do not fire it at your own feet.
  • Watch the clock. After 32 seconds a round turns into HIGH WINDS, which push both fighters outward. Get away from the edge before then.

What's in it

An arcade ladder of eight rivals, first to 3 rounds each, in this order: ROOKIE RAY, BIG TONY, MONA LEDGE, SKIP GUTTER, DR. VENT, CHIMNEY SUE, THE ANTENNA and BOSS PENTHOUSE. Each one is sharper than the last. Each rival you beat unlocks their hat: a cap, a beanie, a cowboy hat, a traffic cone, a top hat, horns, a satellite dish and a crown. Wear one from the HAT button on the menu.

Quick Duel puts you against a random rival you have already reached, on a random roof, first to 5. 2 Players is first to 5 on one keyboard or one phone.

Five rooftops, each with its own sky and city behind it:

  • TAR ROOF SUNSET: a wide flat roof at dusk.
  • THE GAP: two roofs in daylight with a drop between them you can fall down.
  • NEON HEIGHTS: a night roof with a raised block in the middle that stops low shots.
  • FROST LEDGE: a narrower roof in the snow, where your feet slide.
  • STORM DECK: the smallest roof, in the rain, a little slippery.

Behind the game

Each fighter is a stiff little body that is always trying to stand up straight, with a gentle wobble added on top so it never quite stands still. A hit pushes the body and spins it, and the higher the hit, the more it spins. A jump launches you along the line of your lean, so tipping forwards sends you forwards and tipping back sends you back. That one rule is the whole game: you are always waiting for the right moment to lean, jump or shoot.

Rivals play by the same rules and do not aim any better than you can. The better ones simply wait for their sway to line up before they fire, jump back from the edge more often when they are tipping the right way, and sometimes hop over a bullet coming at them. When someone goes over the edge, everything slows down so you can watch them fall.
