TANK DUEL

Pull back, let go, and lob a shell over the hill through the wind. First to three rounds wins.

Two cartoon tanks on rolling hills take turns shooting at each other. Press on the battlefield and pull back like a slingshot: the direction is the angle, the length of the pull is the power, and a short dotted line shows where the shell starts to go. The wind changes every turn and pushes every shell sideways, and every blast digs a crater that tanks drop into, with fall damage if the drop is big. Each tank has 100 health, and the first to win three rounds takes the match.

There are twelve weapons, from the unlimited Shell to the Cluster, the MIRV that splits at the top of its arc, the Roller, the hill-tunnelling Digger, Napalm that runs downhill, the Skipper, the wind-proof Sniper and one Nuke, and the ammo has to last the whole match. Beat four bot ranks in turn, Rookie, Gunner, Ace and General, or play a friend on the same device. Every round rolls a new landscape: meadow, desert, snowfield or dusk.

What is in it: Cartoon tanks shell each other across hills; hits make big cartoon fireballs, craters and damage numbers, and a beaten tank blows up with a KO! No people are shown and there is no blood. Explosions give a soft screen flash and screen shake. More for parents

How to play

TANK DUEL is a turn-based artillery game. Two cartoon tanks sit on rolling hills, one blue and one red, and take turns lobbing shells at each other. Every tank starts a round with 100 health. Knock the other one down to zero and you take the round; the first to win three rounds wins the match.

To aim, press anywhere on the battlefield and pull back, like a slingshot. The direction you pull sets the angle, and the length of the pull sets the power, which is shown next to your finger. A short dotted line shows the first part of the flight. Let go to fire. If you change your mind, drag back to where you started and the shot is cancelled. The big FIRE button fires whatever you are aimed at right now.

On a keyboard, ← and → turn the barrel, ↑ and ↓ change the power, and holding Shift makes both move slowly for fine aiming. Space or Enter fires. Q and E (or Tab) swap weapons, W opens the weapon picker, A and D drive the tank, M mutes and Esc or P pauses.

Before each shot, check the WIND box at the top. The arrow shows which way it blows and the number, from 1 up to 10, shows how hard (it reads CALM when there is none). It changes every turn and pushes your shell sideways the whole way. You get 30 seconds per turn, and a countdown appears for the last 15. If it runs out, your current aim fires on its own.

Tips and strategy

  • Ammo lasts the whole match, not one round. You get one Nuke and one Volcano for the whole match, so think before you spend them in round one. The Shell never runs out.
  • Save the Sniper for a clean shot. It flies fast and nearly flat and ignores the wind. A direct hit on a tank does 52 damage, but if it lands in the dirt it only does 12.
  • Dig the ground out from under them. Every blast leaves a crater, and tanks drop into the holes. A fall of more than a short way costs up to 25 health, so blowing up the hill a tank is standing on can hurt it twice.
  • Don't let a round drag on. The bot gets more accurate with every shot it takes in a round, so the longer you miss, the closer its shells land.
  • Use your two moves. You can drive twice per round with the MOVE buttons. Rolling out of a crater, or down behind a hill, can spoil a shot the bot has already worked out.
  • Mind your own blast. Splash damage hits your own tank too, and the game says OOPS! when it does. Keep the Nuke and Big Shot away from close range.

What's in it

Twelve weapons. Shell (unlimited), Big Shot, Cluster (bursts into five bomblets), MIRV (splits into five at the top of its arc), Roller (lands and rolls downhill), Digger (tunnels through hills, then blows), Napalm (fire that runs downhill and keeps burning), Bouncer (bounces three times, then pops), Volcano (a shower of fireballs), Skipper (hops along the ground for four blasts), Sniper and the Nuke. A little tip pops up saying what each one does.

Four bot ranks: Rookie, Gunner, Ace and General. Each one aims more tightly and reaches for the special weapons more often than the last. Beat a rank in a match to unlock the next. You can also play two players on one device, passing it back and forth.

Every round rolls a brand new landscape in one of four looks: Meadow, Desert, Snowfield or Dusk. The ground is fully destructible, so by round's end the hills are full of holes.

Questions

How do I unlock the General?

Beat Rookie, then Gunner, then Ace, each in a full best-of-five match. Each win unlocks the next rank, and the results screen gives you a NEXT button that goes straight to it.

Can I play on a phone?

Yes. Touch and pull back on the battlefield to aim, and use the bar along the bottom for weapons, moving and FIRE. It works upright, but turning the phone sideways gives you a much bigger view.

Does it save?

Yes, in your own browser: the ranks you have unlocked, your wins and losses at each rank, your win streak and best streak, and whether the sound is muted. Clearing your browser's site data clears the save.
