CHIBI CLASH

Hatch chibi monsters from eggs, then fight wild ones in real time with WASD and three abilities.

Pick a free starter, Pipkin, Sproutle or Bubbit, and take it into a field arena to fight wild monsters in real time. You move with WASD, aim with the mouse, fire three abilities on J, K and L, and dodge with Space. A red circle on the ground means an attack is about to land there, and a red ! over a foe means a big one is coming. Wins pay coins and XP: coins buy eggs in the shop, and XP levels your monster, teaches it new moves and evolves it into a bigger form.

There are 67 species, each with an evolved form, across 10 types and 63 moves. Five zones each have three fights and a boss that turns ENRAGED at half health, the last one the dragon Eclipsidon. After that the Endless Arena throws waves at you forever, with a boss every fifth wave. Eggs cost 100 coins, or 900 for ten, and the rarity chances are shown in the shop. Coins are only ever won in the game.

What is in it: Cute cartoon pixel monsters fight with fire, leaves, water and lightning. Beaten monsters just faint with a "K.O.!", with no blood. Monsters flash white when hit and blink white while winding up a big attack, danger circles on the ground flicker red and white, the screen edge flashes red when you are hit, and hatching an egg or evolving ends in a quick white flash. How to play

CHIBI CLASH is a pixel-art monster battler that plays like an action game. You pick a free starter (Pipkin the fire fox, Sproutle the plant or Bubbit the water fish), take it into a field arena and fight wild monsters in real time. Wins pay coins and XP. Coins buy eggs, and XP makes your monster stronger.

Move with W A S D or the arrow keys and aim with the mouse. Your monster has three abilities on J, K and L (or 1, 2 and 3). Hold a key to keep using it; left click also fires the first one. Space or Shift is a dodge: a quick roll that makes you untouchable for about a quarter of a second, ready again in under a second. Without a mouse, you aim at the nearest foe on your own. Esc or P pauses and M turns the sound off.

Watch the ground and the foes. A red flashing circle means an attack is about to land there, so step out of it. A red ! over a foe means a big attack is coming, and a yellow one means a normal attack.

Tips and strategy

  • Use the type chart. Ember beats Leaf, Leaf beats Splash and Splash beats Ember, and the other seven types hook in around them. A hit on a weak type does half as much damage again, and the other way round you do about a third less. "SUPER!" or "resist" pops up so you can tell. The full chart is on the HOW TO PLAY screen.
  • Use moves of your own type. Your monster does 15% more damage with a move of its own type, so a fire monster should mostly throw fire.
  • Dodge the big ones, not everything. The dodge has a short cooldown. Save it for the red ! attacks and the projectiles you cannot walk away from.
  • Spend your XP. XP is both your level and your wallet. Learn moves 4, 5 and 6 at levels 2, 4 and 6 (40, 70 and 110 XP), and evolve at level 5 for 150 XP. Evolving makes the monster bigger, with 30% more health, attack and defence, and the bosses from zone 2 on are hard to beat without it.
  • Keep moving in boss fights. When a boss drops below half health it becomes ENRAGED, gets faster and calls in a helper. Keep your distance.

What's in it

67 species, each with an evolved form, so 134 monsters in all, built from twelve body plans, among them bugs, birds, fish, jellies, serpents, golems, ghosts, plants, turtles and dragons. There are 10 types and 63 moves: swipes, fireballs, dashes, meteors, heals and shields, some of which burn, slow or stun. Each species can learn six moves and take three into a fight.

There are five zones: Sunny Meadow, Ashen Ridge, Tidepool Coast, Stormcrag Peak and Gloomwood Hollow. Each has its own monsters, three fights (one, two and three foes) and then a boss, a giant evolved monster with its own health bar. Beating a boss opens the next zone, and the last boss is the dragon Eclipsidon. After that the Endless Arena opens, with waves that never stop and a boss from the epic and legendary monsters every fifth wave. Your best wave is saved and you can carry on from it.

The egg shop sells one egg for 100 coins or ten for 900. The chances are shown in the shop: 60% common, 28% rare, 10% epic and 2% legendary. Eggs are bought only with coins you win in the game, never with real money. A monster you already own turns into XP for your copy plus some coins.

Questions

Which starter should I pick?

Pick the one you like the look of. Pipkin spits fire and has a burning dash, Sproutle fires spreads of three leaves and a long vine whip, and Bubbit has slowing bubbles and a water dash. All three learn stronger moves as they level up.

Can I play on a phone?

Yes. Drag with your left thumb on the left half of the screen to move, and use the round buttons for the three abilities and the dodge. Turn the phone sideways, as the arena is much bigger that way.

Does it save?

Yes, in your own browser: your monsters, their levels and moves, your coins, which zones you have cleared, your best endless wave and the monsters you have seen. Clearing your browser's site data clears the save.
