HOOPS

Streetball on the blacktop or a full game in the arena - alone, or online with a friend.

Three games on one side-on court. HALF COURT is streetball: one ring, both teams attacking it, first to eleven and win by two, and a team that wins the ball has to take it back behind the check line. FULL COURT is the real thing: two rings, twos and threes, two minutes on the clock, and the camera runs with the ball. STAND STILL is the old game - one spot, ten balls, a moving hoop and a streak.

The other players actually play basketball: they pick a man and stay with him, deny the pass, sag off and help in the lane, and run plays - pick and roll, give and go, a back-door cut - and they miss, especially from distance and especially tired. Everything you do costs STAMINA: sprinting, guarding, jumping, swiping at the ball and shooting, so a tired player is slower, jumps lower and shoots worse.

Play it on the BLACKTOP, with a chain-link fence, a city block and people hanging over the railings, or in an ARENA with a full bowl, a scoreboard and banners. Baskets, steals and blocks pay COINS, and coins buy jersey designs, street tees, baggy jeans, shoes, hair and caps - or a bigger stamina tank. And you can PLAY ONLINE: one of you hosts a room, up to three friends type the four-letter code, and you are all in the same match.

What is in it: Basketball. Can be played online with a friend using a room code; there is no chat. More for parents

How to play

Pick a game on the home screen, then use the MATCH tab to set the team size, from 1v1 to 5v5, and the venue: street court or arena. You are the first player on the home team. Everyone else, team-mates included, is played by the computer unless friends join you online.

Shooting is a drag: press, pull back, let go. As you pull, a ring fills, with a green band at the power that would drop the ball through the middle of the rim from where you stand. Let go in the band for a clean look; outside it the ball goes long or short by however far out you were. Hold Q while dragging to pass where you point, or tap Q and the game picks the best man.

Half court is streetball: one ring, ones and twos (two from behind the arc), first to 11 and win by two. The scoring side keeps the ball, a team that wins it back must take it behind the check line, and the shot clock is 12 seconds. Full court is two rings, twos and threes, a 24-second shot clock and two minutes on the game clock, and the side that concedes walks it in from its own baseline. Run the shot clock out and you lose the ball. Stand still is the score-attack game: one spot, ten balls, and a hoop that starts moving from the fifth shot.

Tips and strategy

  • Stamina decides who defends. Sprinting and guarding drain it, and only slowing down brings it back; standing almost still refills it nearly three times faster than running. A tired player is slower, jumps lower and shoots worse.
  • Do not land on people. Coming down on top of a player who is on the floor is a foul, and he gets a free throw alone at the line. Land beside the shooter, not on him.
  • Take shots out of the air. Space jumps for rebounds and blocks, or dunks if you are under the ring with the ball. A block pays 5 coins.
  • Guard to make him miss. Shift slows the man in front of you, makes his shot harder and his pass easier to read, but you cannot run flat out while you do it.
  • Swat, do not chase. Click the man with the ball to swipe at it. A steal pays 3 coins.
  • In Stand still, swish or nothing. A swish raises the multiplier, up to nine, and scores 30 times it. A shot off the rim scores 20 and resets the multiplier to one.
  • Do your own scoring. Only your baskets pay you, at two coins per point. A win adds 15.

What's in it

  • Three games: Half court, Full court and Stand still, with online play for Half court.
  • Team sizes from one to five a side, on the blacktop street court or in the arena.
  • Computer players who mark a man, help in the lane and run the pick and roll, the give and go and the back-door cut.
  • A kit shop paid in coins: jersey designs (plain, stripe, hoops, flame, camo), shirt and jean colours, trim, hair styles and colours, headwear and shoes, each row with a few free choices.
  • A stamina shelf: five upgrades at 40 coins each, each adding a fifth to your tank, so a fully bought player has twice the legs.

Questions

How does online play work?

Choose PLAY ONLINE. One player hosts and gets a four-letter code; up to three friends type it in to join. Players alternate sides, so two people is one against one and four is two a side, and computer players fill the rest. The connection runs directly between your browsers.

Does it save?

Yes. Your coins, kit, stamina upgrades and venue are kept in your browser.

Why did the ball go long when I let go in the green?

Being closely guarded and being tired both make the same release less accurate, and the effect grows with distance.

Can I play on a phone?

The drag to shoot works with a finger, but the court games use the keyboard to move, guard and jump, so they play best with a keyboard and mouse.
