How to play
MOONSHOT SLUGGER is a home run derby under the stadium lights. The pitcher winds up, the pitch is called at the top of the screen with its type and speed, and the ball comes in. You put the aim circle on the ball and swing just as it reaches you. On a computer the circle follows your mouse and you swing with a click or Space. On a phone you tap the ball as it arrives: the tap aims and swings in one go.
Two things decide what happens. Timing decides how hard you hit it and where it goes: swing a touch early and you pull it to left field, a touch late and it goes to right, and too early or too late is a foul or a miss. Aim decides the launch: with the ball in the middle of the circle you get a line drive or a bomb, with the circle above the ball you top it into a grounder, and with the circle below it you pop it up.
Only a home run counts. Anything that does not clear the outfield wall is an out, and so is a swing and a miss (a STRIKE). A round ends after ten outs, or after 30 pitches, whichever comes first. Letting a pitch go by without swinging costs you nothing. R restarts the round, M mutes, and Esc or P pauses.
Tips and strategy
- Swing as it arrives, not when you see it. The ball is still a few metres out when you need to click, so go a fraction before it reaches the batter.
- Lead the breaking balls. Curveballs drop a lot and sliders slide sideways, so aim a little lower, or a little ahead, of where you see them.
- Lay off the bad ones. From the second stage some pitches miss the strike zone on purpose. Taking a pitch is free.
- Protect your streak. Back-to-back home runs multiply the points, up to x5. One out resets it.
- Watch for gold. A golden ball is worth double, and it stacks with the streak, so a golden home run at x5 is worth ten times its distance.
- Aim for the rings. Glowing rings float in the stands. Send a home run through one for an extra 300 points.
What's in it
Eight stages, from SANDLOT to MYTHIC: Sandlot, Minors, Prospect, Big League, All-Star, Derby Night, Legend and Mythic. Sandlot is fastballs only, at about 90 km/h, and shows a marker where each pitch will cross the plate. Minors adds the changeup, Prospect the curveball and Big League the slider. From there every stage throws all four pitches, a little faster each stage, with the breaks getting sharper from Derby Night, up to about 140 km/h on Mythic.
Each stage asks for a number of home runs in a round, starting at 3 on Sandlot and going up by one each stage to 10 on Mythic. Hit that target for one star and the next stage unlocks. Three more home runs earn a second star, and six more earn the third, 24 stars in all. The wall is 98 metres away down the lines and 122 metres to centre field.
Scoring: each home run scores its distance in metres times your streak multiplier. Golden balls double it, a ring in the stands adds 300, and a moonshot of 160 metres or more adds 100. On every home run the camera follows the ball out, the distance counts up live and fireworks go off.
Questions
Why did I miss when the circle was on the ball?
Usually it is timing. Look at the message: TOO EARLY or TOO LATE means the swing was at the wrong moment, MISSED IT means the circle was off the ball.
What is the difference between a fly out and a home run?
Distance and height. A ball has to clear the wall. OFF THE WALL means you were close, GROUNDER means the circle was too high on the ball, and UNDER IT means it was too low, so you popped it up for a FLY OUT.
Can I play on a phone?
Yes. Just tap the ball as it reaches you. The tap is your swing, and touch play gets a slightly larger contact circle.
Does it save?
Yes, in your own browser: the stages you have unlocked, your stars and best score on each stage, your longest home run, your career home run total and the mute setting. Clearing your browser's site data clears the save.
