How to play
WORD BLITZ is a 90-second word hunt on a grid of sixteen letter tiles, four by four. Press PLAY and the board drops in with a GO! and the clock starts. To make a word, press on a letter and drag through letters that touch it, sideways, up and down or diagonally, then let go. Each tile can only be used once per word, and words need at least three letters. Dragged one tile too far? Slide back onto the tile before it and the last letter comes off.
When you let go, the tiles flash to tell you what happened: green is a new word and scores, yellow means you have already found it, and red means it is not in the word list (or is shorter than three letters). The word you are building shows above the grid and turns green once it is a real word.
On a keyboard you can also just type. The path lights up as you go, Enter submits, Backspace takes off a letter and Esc clears the word. The Q tile is always Qu, so typing Q fills in the U for you. The round button beside the score rotates the board a quarter turn, and so do Tab, 1 and Shift+R. When the clock runs out you get TIME!, then your results.
Tips and strategy
- Long words are the jackpot. A word scores its tile points times a length bonus: three letters x1, four x1.5, five x2, six x2.5, seven x3 and eight or more x4. One seven-letter word can be worth more than ten little ones.
- Look at the small numbers. Each tile shows its value in the corner. Common letters like E, S and T are worth 1, while J and Z are worth 9, X and Qu 8, and K and V 5.
- Route through the coloured tiles. Every board has two 2L tiles, which double that letter, and one 3W tile, which triples the whole word. Getting a long word through the 3W is the biggest score on the board.
- Keep the combo going. Find a word within four seconds of the last one and the combo climbs by 0.1 each time, up to x2.0 on every word. When you are stuck, bank a quick three-letter word to keep the combo alive while you look.
- Rotate when you go blind. Turning the board does not change which words are on it, but seeing the letters at a new angle often makes words jump out.
What's in it
Classic deals a fresh random board every round. Daily Board is one fixed board per calendar day, the same for everyone who plays it that day. The game keeps your best daily score and counts a streak of days in a row. After a daily round the button says NEW BOARD and deals you a classic board, so your daily best stays honest.
The word list has 66,657 English words. Each board has three stars, set as a share of the points from all its common words. A star pops with a chime the moment you pass its target, even mid-round. Words of five letters or more get a banner: NICE!, GREAT!, AMAZING! and, for eight letters or more, LEGENDARY!
The results screen shows your score, stars, number of words, longest word, best word and top combo, with every word you found and the common words you missed, longest first (up to 40 of them, with a count of the rest). Tap a missed word and a mini board shows where it was. Your score goes into XP, which fills levels, and every three levels brings a new rank, from Rookie up through Speller, Wordsmith, Lexicographer, Word Wizard and Grandmaster to Lexicon Legend.
Questions
Why didn't my word count?
It flashed red because it is not in the game's word list, which leaves out some rare words, and a blocklist removes rude words. A yellow flash means you have already found it this round.
Can I play on a phone?
Yes. Drag with your finger. The tiles are generous about diagonals, so cutting across a corner will not pick up the wrong letter. It works upright or sideways.
Does it save?
Yes, in your own browser: your XP and level, your best classic and daily scores, your daily streak, your longest word ever, how many words you have found and whether the sound is muted. Clearing your browser's site data clears the save.
